TRAVELING INTO SPACE--INNER AND OUTER

Geneticists now believe that if the DNA in a single human cell could be unraveled and strung end to end it could reach from earth to sun, round-trip, more than 400 time. One human brain contains as many synapses as there are stars in the universe. If all 5,1/2 billion people on earth were all talking on the telephone at the same time, but using 18 different telephones, it would almost correspond to the electrical traffic that the brain is handling. The Corpus Callosum tissue separating the two hemispheres of the brain contains as many connections as every telephone line in the U.S. In other words, to cut through the corpus callosum would be the equivalent of cutting every telephone in America. One human DNA cell contains more than 3 billion genetic codes. If you were to spend 8 hours a day looking at each code for one second, it would take two years.

Years ago, one of Germany's most influential scientific magazines, GEO, published an article which publicly challenged the validity of Darwin's theory of evolution. The announcement which startled scientific minds around the world made the following statement: "Gradual evolution by natural selection, the key element of Darwin's theory, longer stands up to the latest scientific results..." In qualifying its position against Darwin's long-accepted claim the GEO article went on to explain that the "chief witness" in support of evolution, a fossil of the Archaeopteryx, or a bird-like animal claimed to be the missing link, has "lost its authenticity." In referring to the origin of the Universe, the article also included this statement: "The idea of a preconceived plan instead of a succession of coincidences suggests itself."

The scientists admitted that mathematical perfection in the Universe excluded the idea of accidental evolution; rather, they acknowledged that Creation resulted from a "Preconceived Plan." To this, we eagerly agreed. But where does this idea of a preconceived plan take us? We are back at Genesis 1:1. For the past 100 years, there has been a build-up toward this truth as an undeniable scientific conclusion. Ultimately, science will have to stand before its own indisputable evidence that creation exists because of a Creator. Behind the design is a Designer. The biggest breakthrough came more than a century ago in 1912 at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, by Vesto Melvin Slipher, an American astronomer. He discovered that approximately a dozen galaxies were moving away from the earth at speeds of a million miles an hour. At the time, scientists did not know what the discovery meant but they knew it was of great importance.

It was not until later that Edwin Hubble, another astronomer, used the information to formulate a new theory about the earth's origin. Basically, Hubble suggested that the Universe had a sudden, fixed point of beginning. All Creation had suddenly exploded from a central point from which the galaxies were still expanding outwardly. That point of beginning, they say, was no larger than the period at the end of this sentence. The idea was quickly dubbed the "Big Bang Theory". The next

question with which the scientists had to grapple was, "What came before the beginning?" "Who was the Prime Mover?" To this, a British Scientist, Edward Milne, gave the reply, "The first cause of the Universe is left for the reader to insert. But our picture is incomplete without Him."

Interestingly, one of the last minds to accept the "Big Bang Theory" and by far the most Influential scientist in history was Albert Einstein. Einstein rejected the theory because "it implied that Creation had a beginning." While he accepted belief in God as real, he was Jewish, he rejected the idea of God as Creator. In 1930, however, Einstein visited the Mount Wilson Observatory in Pasadena, California, looked at the evidence through the giant, 100-inch telescope and admitted the proof was there: The Universe had indeed originated in a single moment and everything was still flying outwardly from that incredible blast.

In the middle 1970s, leading astronomers in England announced that they had discovered the galaxies farthest removed from the center point of that "explosion". These galaxies were actually the "edge" of the Universe. The British scientists went on to make a mind-boggling statement: "Beyond these galaxies, nothing exists; not even space." To comprehend such a thought, our minds must pass beyond the physical realm into the spiritual. These facts leave scientists in an embarrassing situation: The conclusion points inevitably toward the reality of God. As one scientist put it, "We are waiting for someone to step out of the crowd and tell us what it all means." Even so, we must remember that "the world by wisdom, knows not God."

Saving faith will never come through scientific discovery. Science can open the door of inquiry; but only when that inquiry leads to the person of Jesus by whom the Father "made the worlds" can saving faith result. The same verse goes on to say that "It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believed." Robert Jastrow, in the New York Times Magazine, reveals more of the scientists' quandary. He said, "Consider the immensity of the problem. Science has proved that the Universe exploded into being at a certain moment it asks, "What cause produced this effect? Who or what put the matter and energy into the Universe? Was the Universe created out of nothing, or was it gathered together out of pre-existing materials?" And science cannot answer these questions.

Jastrow continues, "Now we would like to pursue that inquiry further back in time, but the barrier seems insurmountable. For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries."

Whether we are theologians or scientists, we can still prove by unwavering mathematical law that our universe was designed by a great engineering Intelligence. For example, take ten pennies and number each of them one to ten. Put them in your pocket and shuffle them. Mathematically, your chance of drawing out numbers one and two in succession is one in 100. To draw out one, two, and three, in perfect order, your chance is one in one thousand. By fixed, mathematical law, your chance of drawing out all ten in uninterrupted order is one in Ten Billion. These are the odds of chance. Simply stated, it can't be done. Yet with such evidence before us, some will still persist in arguing defensively for accidental evolution. You could more easily argue that your automobile resulted from a factory explosion in which all the parts coincidentally joined together in mid-air.

But what is the Christian view of the "Big-Bang" theory? I personally believe that it is the deepest penetration into truth to which science has yet come. While the Bible gives us no clue as to how God created the Universe, it is easy to believe that He Himself is the center point of that explosion. He is the core and axis of its cause. Probably His Throne occupies the "O" degree from which everything shot outwardly. He is the "Original Light" from whom all light sprang. To my satisfaction, the fourth and fifth chapters of Revelation describe the Throne's Point-Of-Explosion scene. Jesus occupies the center as the "Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” "By Him were all things created, that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones or dominions, or principalities or powers: all things were created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things and by Him, all things consist." Colossians 1:16,17.

Whether or not the first Creation resulted from an explosive out-rolling of power as science claims, we will have to wait and see. But we do know that such an event is yet to occur when Jesus descends again into our physical realm. Our material world will not be able to survive the invasion of His Glory and Power. Rather, "The Heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." II Peter 3:10. When that blessed day comes, the redeemed in Christ will discover that the illimitable expanse of the new Creation has been designed for their pleasure and use. Sin will be gone. The Universe will be clean. Life will seize hold upon its true nature: Eternity and Holiness.

Not only is the signature of God written across the Universe but it is also found in every microscopic cell of man. There is a wondrous display of holy wisdom and perfection in our human body that identically reappears in the rest of creation. No spot of the cosmos is exempt from the presence of God. Please stay with me. This is not a science-lecture; it is a God-sermon. You may feel that I am being more philosophical than theological but that is not the case. I know where I am going--so don't panic. Nearly 60 years ago, I came across a poem by an Atlanta author, Ernest Hartsock, whose insight grabbed me and never turned loose. He said:

"Ages of earth are in me; I am made

Of time's immortal matter, which is dust;

I am old atoms in a new parade,

I am iron, miracled from rust.

"This that is I, has not been I forever;

Once it was pearl or spider, flame or fly.

Nature's destination is endeavor,

There is no dust Heaven will let die."

To my satisfaction, Hubble's explanation is the best, non-theological explanation of Genesis 1:1: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth ..." In 1970, astronomers in England announced they had discovered the galaxies farther removed from the center point of that explosion. These star-clusters were actually the "rim" of the Universe. The British scientists went on to present an astonishing conclusion: "Beyond these galaxies," They said, "nothing exists; not even space." The Hubble Telescope, named for Edwin, stationed in space and monitoring the heavens, was recently given a unique assignment. It was told to select a spot with the least density of stars and photograph it. The site chosen was equivalent in size to a grain of sand held between a man's fingers at arm's length. What the telescope photographed through that tiny, minuscule window was breath-taking: In distances beyond comprehension, it showed stratum after stratum of uncountable galaxies disappearing into the distance. If such a panorama lies behind a pin-prick sized view, how great is the power that exploded the rest of it into being? More wonderfully, how great is the Creator who designed it!

If the number of stars in the Universe boggles your mind then hear this: Your brain contains as many synapses as there are stars in existence. The synapse is the point of contact between neurons, by which nerve impulses are successfully transmitted through the brain. Inside your head, you have a composite of total creation.

At conception, the genetic code from mother and father merge into an ideal arrangement for the creation of a totally new, unique human being. Billions and billions of components perfectly join. In the embryo, for example, 1,000,000 optic nerves grow separately from eye to brain and join in the middle. Each nerve attaches to its counterpart perfectly. There are no mix-ups.

In its blind attempt to eliminate God and defend atheism, Science has put itself in a most embarrassing position. Many physicists claim that there are no other dimensions but the ones already known.. Our present dimension is incalculable, multiplied trillions of light years across and expanding 186,000 miles per second. The denial of other dimensions is necessary before science can rule out the possibility of a spiritual realm. In an almost blind-desperation, science wants to disprove all religious claims. I quote an atheist, Dr. Lisa Randall, female theoretical physicist, author, and Harvard University Professor:

“The Universe has higher, hidden, infinitely larger dimensions so vast that our’s in comparison is nothing more than a 3-D sinkhole.” While some physicists reject her ideas, the greatest acknowledged physicist of all, Dr. Stephen Hawkins, an atheist, is actively pursuing her concepts. How can one deny the existence of the spiritual-realm while acknowledging the existence of other unknown dimensions?

Many astronomers believe that the total matter visible in our Universe is only 10% of the total amount existing. In other words, 90% of the matter in our Universe is invisible–or what is called “dark” matter. That is mind-boggling but even this does not involve the other dimensions Dr. Randall says exist.

An adult body contains 75,000 miles of blood vessels, serving more than 60 billion body cells. During its 120 day life-span, each blood cell makes about 75,000 round trips from the heart to other parts of the body. That is a total distance of about 5 billion, 635 million miles traveled in its lifetime. During that time, each cell is simultaneously carrying out its individual work-responsibility for the body. In a quiet room, cup your hands tightly over your ears, like you have done with a seashell at the beach, and listen to the roar of blood rushing through your body. That is literally the ocean-roar of life racing through your body. In exploring Creation, the trip inward is as infinite as the trip outward. Also be aware that there are more than 100 million different animal and plant species on planet earth. Of each species, there may be hundreds of millions of individuals. Each has its own distinctive genetic code. In the presence of overwhelming evidence of man's miraculous design, the claim of evolution becomes totally absurd.

David exclaimed: "For you have formed my inward parts; You have covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.

My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me when as yet there were none of them" (Psalm 139:13-16).

Accidental evolution? Hardly. Your entire human body could be reconstructed from information recorded in just one of those sixty billion cells. In the time spent reading this article, those cells worked together to make that possible. Next time you are outside looking at the stars, take a look inward. Creation's vastness goes just that far inside of you.

Question: Is it possible that these two directions, inward and outward, ultimately meet? In this kind of travel, is it possible to "reach the East by sailing West"? Heaven holds the answer. Only there, will we know the truth.

Oh, fools! Had we eyes to see,

Into the realm of microscopic things;

To step inside the spider's egg,

With its own suns and galaxies,

Here we'd behold Creation in full display

And the flawless pearl of system find,

That touches every insect, leaf, or stone,

With the same brush-stroke of design.

Astonishment would seize our breath,

Silence us as quiet as death,

To behold Creation's chartless realm,

Compressed inside the tiniest cell.

But, more than that, to understand,

God's whole design in nature

Inscribed in every bone of man.
